Yes, I know you miss being out in your garden, I feel it too. Why? Because I do as well. There’s something about being IN the flowerbeds touching, smelling & caring for God’s creation in a beautiful way. Guess what? There are things you can do to support your garden even when you can’t be in it. I’m here to share ONE thing you can do now to help your garden thrive once the growing season begins. Start a composting bin.
There’s even a visual to assist you in starting one, click the link to see more.
Here is what you can use for a written list to get started. Not all of these items are required immediately; think of them as additions to enrich the soil being created. Of course, this involves repeat attention but not that much, just every once in a while. Ready?
- A re-closeable container (with an opening large enough to put your hand inside)
- Coffee grounds
- Shredded paper (ex. From a shredder)
- Tea bag contents
- Cleaned and ground up eggshells
- Sawdust (optional)
- Fruit / Veggie scraps (no spices, sauces, or meats)
- Sand
- Last year’s potted plant soil
- Worms (from the ground or fishing bait from a store)
Eventually, that closable container can become garbage can-sized, I found a metal one that was suitable. However, I do not know how much space you have available or what size garden you are caring for.
Doing something like this to support my flowerbeds also supported my mental health. Composting is one of them. There’s something about doing what I can do with what I have that in turn does good for the part of the world I’m involved in.
I have to say, I use to think composting was gross. Just the looks of it. I’d watch YouTube videos out of curiosity, then one day I decided to try it and I’m so glad I did. Now I’m sharing what I’ve found with you.

Until next time, take care.
